for like ever party 2010 - flags.

for the valentine's party last week I made these flags out of tissue paper and just sort of strung them up inside our front door. they were really easy to make as you would imagine, and I would like to see an entire ceiling covered with them.

of course, the party was in the evening so it didn't look nearly as lovely as this. but it was such a fun party.

little book of envelopes.

I thought I would post a few pictures of a little book I made for Megan. I completely got the idea from oh, hello friend's envelope book. when Megan was engaged, I would watch her with her new fiance, and when I was away from St. George I would hear of cute things that they were doing together and I thought she should have some sort of documentation of all that--at least what I could remember and see. So each envelope just has a memory or a journal entry of mine throughout their engagement from my perspective.

ariellie.

my roommate Ariel unprivatized her blog. hooray! do yourself a favor.

Ariel and I are so much alike. she is the strongest example of faith and courage to me. I couldn't ask for a better roommate.

all cleaned up.

consuming me for the past 2 or 3 weeks has been my bedroom. when i returned home my closet was still full of baby toys and clothes, important memorabilia. but time to de-clutter. it was debate-worthy whether i should keep the authenticity of the bedroom of my childhood and adolescence. the paraphernalia on these walls has been gathering since sister katie moved out of this room 11 years ago.

before.

these walls look so jumbled.  and they are. just a hodgepodge of high school/girls camp/efy/middle school/some college/childhood/christmas/vacation junk.   but not junk at all to me.  I hoard everything and I'm proud of it.  I would never throw any of this stuff away.  I did make the executive decision that their life needed to be suspended for a while, spending time in the basement.  but I vow my kids will never see the end of this stuff.  it's my legacy.
I also hoard photos and people. I love them. but they had to go.

after.

my mother has some of these prayer flags. they are stunningly beautiful and it ended up being one of those things you just have in your head, and then...create. I was extremely pleased with how they turned out, only adding to the whiteness.
trying to remember where I first came up with the crazy idea to go all white, I came across this lovely photo and remembered. lucky me, Alyson was my partner for a photo swap about 4 months ago. when I received the photo in the mail, I was still in the mindset of home, and eagerly designed my crispy and clean space.

I was originally looking forward to a frame/photo montage with photos of my grandparents in their youth. there are so many beautiful ones of each of them. but I came across this and had to go with it. I still want to hang the photos, I'm just not sure how. I was also originally planning to put them on the 4th wall. right in the center where nothing is. but I just can't put anything on my blank wall. I love its whiteness. the more there is on the walls, the less white it becomes.

collage/inspiration boards.

drew's collage.

this domino issue got me thinking about collages.  my mom always taught us to make collages.  (maybe another hippie thing?)  i loved doing that as a little kid.  she is still an avid practicer of collages.  they are really 'in' right now in design and decorating.  that is, disguised under an alias name of inspiration boards.  here are some i like.

flickr search: inspiration board.
marta's ever famous.
directions---make your own.
neat studio walls
a bathroom, even.
--millions more. what are your favorites?

here is the closest thing to mine.  i'm definitely going to improve it. but i do like it now.

laundry delights.

my first experience at the laundromat was a nightmare. it was my first saturday at school. as was every other freshman's. i did a million loads in one machine, working everything out through trial and error. i now choose to do my laundry in the middle of the night {the laundromat is open 24/7!}. it is so peaceful. a wonderful place to nod off while reading the narrative and life of frederick douglass.

look familiar mom? i have yet to overcome my messiness.

audrey on the wall

much to my financial dismay, the poster sale was going on again this week. and with better deals. so i had to indulge. found one of the last audrey ones. there is hardly any wall space left {except for a huge surface where we plan to put a humongous map} so i put her in the hall. this way we can adore her without having to worship her.

broccoli salad

decided to make my favorite broccoli salad of my mom's. i was worried i wouldn't be able to make it...{everything i've attempted to make so far has not been very tasty} but i did it! yay. it is so delicious, if you care to venture to make it:

chopped broccoli
cheese
red onion
bacon

dressing:
sugar
mayonaise
vinegar
